“You can't build a reputation on what you're going to do.”
– Henry Ford
It seems we now live in a time where there is a constant search for the shortcut or “hack” to become an expert in a particular field, without putting in the hours, days and years of hard work actually doing the thing you want to become established in. Well, I have some sobering news for those people, it can’t be done. Certainly not in the motor industry.
There is no substitute for getting your sleeves rolled up and getting on with it; direct, everyday experience, to be able to give clients the confidence, value and expertise they should expect and demand, to show their trust that they place in me is in very safe hands.
I began my journey into the motor trade to build my reputation and career, some 34 years ago in 1989 as a trainee sales executive. Even then I had a goal to specialise in the premium, sports and prestige car market. Unlike now, you couldn’t even think of progressing into a dealership in that sector without a minimum of 5 years’ experience, so that’s what I did. My apprenticeship, learning every single day, directly experiencing the selling, the inspecting and buying of hundreds of cars, along with all the financing processes.
The following years were spent successfully progressing my career with a main Land Rover dealer and then franchised Mercedes-Benz dealers, moving into a management position, so again to understand the whole customer journey at that level, importantly what parts of the process works and what doesn’t work, you can get a very accurate feel where improvements can be made, from years of feedback from clients. I eventually arrived at the conclusion that to truly provide my own bespoke personal service levels that can adapt to every individual clients requirements, be agile and flexible to their needs without having any agenda or ties to a particular manufacturer or dealer, the only way to do this was to break free from the shackles of the corporate world.
A New Concept
Fast forward to 2010 when I set up my own business, Lawrence Smith Specialist Car Consultant and Broker, to continue to look after the motoring requirements of the loyal client base I have built up over the years. I build long standing relationships with new clients in the UK and internationally for all of their future motoring needs as a more modern alternative solution. Think of it as a car concierge or personal car shopper, offering a premium luxury car sourcing service, expertise to help sell your pride and joy, or leasing your dream car, plus many more bespoke services tailored around your requirements. The days of me selling cars ended when I left my dealership days behind, and I haven’t sold a car since. I truly mean that. Instead, I help people successfully buy, sell and lease cars, all of my clients feel and experience that is a far more healthy, transparent, dynamic.
The Business Today
Today, the business continues to go from strength-to-strength. I have bought and sold thousands and thousands of fabulous cars over the years, at the very highest level and rejected more than I care to remember that didn’t meet my exacting standards for my own cars or my clients. So you can share my extensive experience and knowledge to help and guide you through every aspect of the buying, selling or leasing process, safely, seamlessly and enjoyably, with great proven results. I instantly recognise an amazing car when I see one, after all, I am and always have been a huge petrol head, it just happens to be my day job also, for which I am very lucky.
Some things have changed considerably over the 34 years I have been on this journey, particularly with the advent of the internet and technology in general, one thing that has not though or never will, is amazing customer service. The customer experience is always paramount, to work for and with clients to achieve the very best results and value for them, will always be far healthier than feeling like you are being sold something. It doesn’t have to be a time consuming, laborious process, which it can sometimes feel like.
My clients give me the challenge and I provide the solution, so I look forward to hearing how best I can help you, with whatever your present and future motoring requirements.
